Moong Chilka Recipe

Ingredients:

 

  • 1 cup moong chilka (green gram with skin)
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing

Instructions:

 

  • Rinse the moong chilka under running water and soak it in water for at least 30 minutes.
  • Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add cumin seeds. When they start spluttering, add chopped onions and green chili, and sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
  • Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a few seconds.
  • Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well and cook until the tomatoes turn soft and mushy.
  • Drain the soaked moong chilka and add it to the pressure cooker. Mix well and sauté for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add 4 cups of water and mix well.
  • Close the pressure cooker and cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is cooked well.
  • Once the pressure is released, open the cooker and mix the dal well. If the dal is too thick, add some more water and mix well.
  • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
